Tegatech TEGA v2 aims to battle it out with the HP Slate 500 for a slice of the burgeoning corporate Windows 7 tablet market.
The TEGA v2 sports a 10.1 inch, 1024x600 capacitive multi-touch display and runs Windows 7 Home or Professional on an Intel Atom processor with 1GB/2GB of DDR3 RAM and a 32GB/64GB solid state drive. Australian-based Tegatech primarily targets corporate users and the TEGA v2 is available in a range of configurations with the option of 3G, WiMAX, WiBro, extra RAM and a larger hard drive, but not GPS. You can also buy the tablet with no operating system installed.
The TEGA v2 comes with a stylus to compliment Windows 7's handwriting support. It also features USB ports, mini-VGA port, SIM card slot, SD card slot and a 1.3 megapixel front camera. Like the HP Slate 500, the TEGA v2 offers roughly iPad-esque dimensions with an aluminium back which gives it more of an iGadget look. The TEGA v2 is 1mm thinner than the Slate 500 and offers extra screen real estate, but the trade-off is that it's heavier at 870gm.
Tegatech also works to compensate for Windows' shortcomings by pre-installing the Thinix Touch large icon interface - although it still falls short of slick iOS and Android touchscreen interfaces. This Windows 7 tablet has another impressive trick up its sleeve - the ability to dual-boot with Android 1.6 (with an upgrade to 2.2 expected). It's not pre-loaded; you need to download it from the Tegatech website and install it using UNetbootin. Unfortunately the Android distro was initially plagued with WiFi issues, though they have since been addressed in an update.
